Introduction of flame retardant grades of common foam materials

source: Foam Pageviews: time:Aug 09, 2022

describe:

For the nomenclature, classification and test methods of flame retardant grades of foam materials, the flame retardant grades of commonly used foams have been sorted out and introduced in detail.

Introduction of flame retardant grades of common foam materials

What is the flame retardant grade of foam material? That is, the properties that the substance has or the material has after treatment obviously delays the spread of flame, and the grade is divided accordingly.

Grading standard: The flame retardant grade increases step by step from HB, V-2, V-1 to V-0:

1. HB: The lowest flame retardant grade in the UL94 standard. It is required to burn at a rate of less than 40 mm per minute for samples 3 to 13 mm thick; less than 70 mm per minute for samples less than 3 mm thick; or to extinguish before the 100 mm mark.
2. V-2: The flame was extinguished within 60 seconds after the sample was subjected to two 10-second combustion tests. Combustibles may fall.
3. V-1: The flame was extinguished within 60 seconds after the sample was subjected to two 10-second combustion tests. No burning objects should fall.
4. V-0: The flame is extinguished within 30 seconds after the sample is subjected to two 10-second combustion tests. No burning objects should fall.

Flame retardant level requirements: 94HB is a level test method, which is rarely seen, and the combustion cannot be self-sustaining. When the V0/V1/V2 test does not work, it is the method used.

A: For samples with thicknesses between 0.120" and 0.500", the burn rate shall not exceed 1.5" per minute over a 3.0" span
B: For samples less than 0.120" thick, the burn rate shall not exceed 3.0" per minute over a 3.0" span
C: The sample stops burning when the flame approaches the 4.0" mark.

UL94V-0, V-1, V-2
Sample: 5" x 1/2" x thickness (typical thickness is 1/16", 1/8", 1/4")

Test procedure for flame rating: A total of 10 samples (2 sets) are tested for each thickness. Five samples of each thickness were placed for 48 hours at 23°C and 50% RH before testing. Five samples of each thickness were placed at 70°C for 7 days before testing.

The sample is placed perpendicular to the long axis and mounted. Install with the lower end of the sample 3/8" from the top of the burner tube. Place a blue flame 3/4" high in the center of the lower end of the sample, burn for 10 seconds, then remove the flame (at least from the sample). 152mm away)

If the sample drips off grain by grain, the liquid drips onto a layer of unsurgically treated cotton below the sample, which is placed 12" below the sample.
silicone foam
Level requirements: 94V-0
A: There is no sample that still burns for more than 10 seconds after the test flame is removed (flame burning time).
B: For each set of 5 samples, after 10 ignitions, the total burning time with flames does not exceed 50 seconds
C: No sample has been burned to the jig (including burning with flames and burning with redness)
D: Without any sample, burning melted droplets dripped and ignited the cotton 12" below.
E: Without any sample, the red burning continued for more than 30 seconds (flameless burning time) after the test flame was removed for the second time.

94V-1
A: There is no sample that still burns for more than 30 seconds after the test flame is removed.
B: For each set of 5 samples, after 10 ignitions, the total burning time with flames does not exceed 250 seconds
C: Same as C of 94V-0
D: Without any sample, burning melted droplets dripped and ignited the cotton 12" below.
E: Without any sample, the red burning continued for more than 60 seconds after the test flame was removed for the second time.

94V-2
A: There is no sample that still burns for more than 30 seconds after the test flame is removed.
B: Same as B of 94V-1
C: Same as C of 94V-0
D: The sample was allowed to burn. The melted droplets dripped and ignited the cotton 12" below, but the cotton burned for a shorter time.
E: Same as E of 94V-1
UL94-5VA or UL94-5B

According to the results of the sample test, the material should be classified as 94-5VA or 94-5VB

The test procedure is as follows:
The sample without burn through is 94-5VA
The burn-through sample is 94-5VB
Sample: 5" x 1/2" x thickness (rod) 6" x 8" x thickness (plate) Typical thickness is (1/16", 1/8", 1/4")

Procedure for rod samples (Method A):
2 sets of 10 samples in total to be tested.
Five samples of each thickness were tested after 48 hours at 23°C, 50% RH.
Five samples of each thickness were tested after 7 days at 70°C.
For rod samples, mount perpendicular to the long axis.

Place a 5" high flame and a 1/2" inner flame on the bottom corner of the sample at a 20-degree angle to the vertical. The tip of the inner flame is brought into contact with the sample.

The flame burns for 5 seconds, moves for 5 seconds, and this action is repeated until the sample has undergone 5 burns.

Level requirements:
A: No sample continued to burn (including flame burning and red burning) for more than 60 seconds after the fifth ignition.
B: None of the samples burned and the melted droplets dripped and ignited the cotton below.

Procedure for flat samples (Method 2)
The same description as the rod sample: 3 samples (2 sets) are installed horizontally, and the flame is placed in the center of the bottom surface to burn.

The flame retardant grade of commonly used foam: UL94HBF/HF-1/HF-2 is mainly for the horizontal test method of foam sponge, the sample test specification is 150*50M, the thickness does not exceed 13M, and half of the 20 test samples need to be tested That is, 20 pieces need to be aged for 168 hours before testing.
