Is polyurethane foam toxic?

 

Polyurethane foam is a non-toxic product, but the raw materials used to produce polyurethane are toxic.

 

The synthesis of polyurethane foam requires polyols, isocyanates, surfactants, catalysts, blowing agents and some functional additives:

1. Polyols and isocyanates are completely reacted to form polymer solid substances, which are not volatile or residues.

2. Surfactants and catalysts do not participate in the reaction, and will stay in the foam and dissipate slowly. The emission is very small at room temperature, but the high temperature environment will accelerate the volatilization, so the new car will have a heavy odor after exposure to the sun. Now there are reactive surfactants and catalysts, which will not be released after the reaction is integrated into the polymer chain segment.

3. The foaming agent is divided into chemical foaming agent and physical foaming agent. The chemical foaming agent is water, which reacts to produce carbon dioxide, and is odorless; the physical foaming agent is a low-boiling substance (turns from liquid to gas when heated), which has been almost completely volatilized after the reaction, which is harmful to the production personnel, but it is in the hands of the user At that time, there were basically no such substances.
